Update, Committees, Thanks!

Bill update

HB 245, Safety in Public Schools (Wright, R), was passed by the House Judiciary Committee today, by a vote of 9-0-2.  I was not able to attend the hearing.
This offensive bill treats bringing a toy gun to school as a more serious offense than aggravated assault, and ignores the fact that crime is caused by people, not guns.  HB 245 is an insult to all gun owners!  As far as I can tell, it was passed - you guessed it - to get federal funds from the viciously anti-gun Clinton administration.

Please call your own Representative and ask him/her to OPPOSE HB 245 unless it is amended to include ALL violent offenses.

UTGuns offered the bill sponsor, Rep. Wright, assistance in amending this bill.  He refused.

Committee alerts!

HB 91 - Tax credits for safes (Bennion, R) will be heard by the House Revenue and Taxation Committee TOMORROW at 8 AM, Room 303.  See yesterday's alert (http://www.utguns.freeservers.com/legalerts020100.html) for details.

HB 95, (Dave Jones's, D) prohibition against private firearms sales will be heard by the House Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice Committee on FRIDAY, FEB. 4 at 9 AM in Room 225.

HB 95 proposes to ban all private transactions of firearms unless a background check is conducted.  While the bill appears to affect only gun shows and other "events" such as swap meets, my reading indicates that it could ban all private sales.  (If 20% of vendors are selling guns, a background check is required.  But if there's only one vendor <an individual in his home>, that's 100% of vendors, isn't it?)

At a minimum, all such events would be required to either have a BCI background check service set up, or have an FFL willing to do background checks for everyone at the event.  This would effectively shut down smaller gun shows, and eliminate private transactions at other events.  But actually enforcing this bill would require registration of ALL gun show attendees, which would completely shut down gun shows!!

Please plan to attend this hearing if possible.  And please contact committee members and insist that they OPPOSE HB 95.
