UTGuns Delegate Info

Are you sick of Utah politicians who support gun control?   Are you tired of spending your time attending committee hearings, writing to legislators, arguing with them on the phone - and STILL seeing bad bills passed every year?  Wouldn't you rather go skiing, attend the Sundance Festival, watch the Jazz, or spend time with your family?

As long as our government is manipulated by people like Gov. Mike Leavitt, Sen. Orrin Hatch, Senate President Lane Beattie and their fellow socialists and statists masquerading as Republicans, our problems will continue to get worse.  Luckily, there IS a solution!  We the people can decide who runs for office!

In order to run for office, a candidate must first be chosen, or nominated, by his own party.  This selection is done at the State and County Conventions.  Candidates for Governor, U.S. Senate, U.S. House, Attorney General, and multi-county state legislative positions are chosen at the State Convention.  Any candidate who gets 60% +1 of the vote is AUTOMATICALLY the party candidate for that office.  If no candidate gets 60% of the vote, there is a primary to determine who gets the nomination.

State legislators and county officials are chosen at County Conventions.  The rules vary somewhat from county to county, but the same principles apply.

The people who vote at these conventions are ordinary people like us, who volunteer to serve as DELEGATES.  A small number of delegates represent each PRECINCT.  A precinct is about the size of a neighborhood.  There are about 3,500 delegates to the Republican State Convention.

So, if YOU become a delegate, YOU have a say in deciding who runs for office!  And becoming a delegate is EASY!

Delegates are chosen at CAUCUSES.  Each precinct has its own caucus, and all of them will be held on MONDAY, MARCH 27, 2000, at 7 PM.  Most caucus meetings are held at someone's home, although sometimes they're held at schools, libraries, or other public places.  Usually only a few people, maybe 6-10, attend although this number varies.  At the caucus meeting, county delegates, and precinct officers are elected by those attending the meeting.  In most counties, state delegates are also elected.

So, if you attend the caucus meeting, and bring several friends, neighbors, and family members from the precinct with you, you stand a very good chance of being elected a DELEGATE!   ALL DELEGATES to the Republican Conventions MUST BE REGISTERED REPUBLICANS!  If you are not registered as a Republican, you will need to re-register.  (Currently about 87% of voters are not affiliated with a party.)  Registration information is available HERE or by calling your county clerk.  If you have Adobe software, you can download a registration form HERE.

IF ENOUGH PRO-GUN, PRO-CONSTITUTION, PRO-LIBERTY PEOPLE SERVE AS DELEGATES, MIKE LEAVITT AND ORRIN HATCH WILL SOON BE LOOKING FOR "HONEST WORK"!

The best part is that ANYONE can do this.  You don't need money, campaign contributions, fame, political connections, or a face-lift.  All you need to do is organize your friends and neighbors and SHOW UP!

In order to get enough pro-liberty delegates to make a difference, WE NEED YOU!  If you would be willing to serve as a delegate, are already a delegate and plan to serve again, or if you would be willing to work with others to help organize and elect delegates, please VOLUNTEER!  For those of you who are new to the process, we will be holding delegate training sessions, and will be happy to answer your questions.

Note: UTGuns is not a partisan organization.  However, because about 40% of Utahns vote a straight Republican ticket without consideration for the qualifications of individual candidates, we are focusing on the Republican conventions, and particularly on the State Convention.   We believe that removing anti-gun, anti-liberty politicians like Gov. Leavitt and Sen. Hatch is the most effective way to restore and protect our rights

UTGuns respects the right of each person to make individual decisions about which candidates and which party best represent his or her interests.
